Since being elected to the NC Senate in 2010, creating jobs has been my top priority. I know what it takes to create jobs and I will CONTINUE to work tirelessly to ensure that good jobs are available to every North Carolinian. The most important step to creating jobs is ensuring government stays out of the way so that it is easier for businesses to start and grow. Small business is the job creating engine of our economy. I will continue to fight to cut unnecessary regulations and high tax rates so we can get our small businesses growing and get people back to work.
CUT WASTEFUL SPENDING
From 2000-2010, our state government spending grew at an alarming rate and was out of control. As your Senator, for the past two years I have stood up and said NO MORE! I have worked hard to cut wasteful spending, and balanced a state budget that started with a projected $2.5 BILLION dollar deficit. I will continue to fight for smaller government so we can reduce the tax burden on our families and businesses.
North Carolina has the highest corporate and personal income tax rates in the Southeast. This is killing jobs and hurting our working families. Our tax laws are outdated and need reform. We need to lower our state corporate and personal income tax rates to help our economy grow, and I will fight every day in the NC Senate to see that this happens.
I believe that our schools must be centers of learning excellence where we
prepare our students not only for future employment, but to become
productive, contributing citizens of our State and Nation. We cannot
achieve excellence by simply spending more money on the status quo; we must
reform education to develop a passion for learning in our students. In the
NC Senate I will continue working hard to improve our education system by
giving parents more control and more choice in educating their children,
rewarding the success of outstanding teachers, and holding schools
accountable for academic results. We must ensure that our children are
proficient in reading by the third grade, increase our high school
graduation rates, and make sure that college bound high school graduates
don't have to take remedial courses to compete on the college level. Our
students are the future of North Carolina, and we must provide them with the
academic and vocational skills they need to be successful.
To protect North Carolinians from President Obama’s overreaching federal health care law, in 2011 I worked hard to pass the Health Care Freedom Act that gave North Carolinians the right to opt out of the mandate to purchase health insurance. We thought North Carolinians deserved the same right the Obama administration extended to some favored corporations, unions and Washington insiders. Governor Perdue sided with President Obama and vetoed the bill. Veto Over-ride is pending.
In 2011, I worked hard to pass the Voter ID bill to promote and ensure honest and fair elections in our state. Studies show that photo ID requirements boost voter confidence and participation and prevent voter fraud. (Remember ACORN?) Over 70% of the voters in North Carolina support Voter ID, but Governor Perdue sided with President Obama and vetoed the bill. Veto Over-ride is pending.
SANCTITY OF LIFE
I am endorsed by the NC Right to Life Committee and believe that human life is precious and should be protected. I oppose taxpayer-funded abortion and will defend the right to life for unborn children and the elderly. As a member of the Senate freshman class, I was privileged to be a primary sponsor of the Unborn Victims of Violence Act and the Woman’s Right to Know Act, and to present and defend these bills to my colleagues on the Senate floor. As a result, North Carolina moved up to 25th in Americans United for Life’s pro-life rankings. I am thankful to have been a part of this historic year in the General Assembly, and intend to do everything I can to continue moving the culture of North Carolina from a culture of abortion to a culture of life.
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees law-abiding citizens the right to keep and bear arms. In 2010 I earned an “A” rating from the NRA and for the past two years have fought to protect our Second Amendment rights against those who wish to restrict them. Last year I worked hard to pass a Castle Doctrine that is among the best in the nation to ensure that people have the right to defend themselves in their homes and businesses. I also worked to expand North Carolina’s concealed carry laws, so that you now have the right to protect yourself at our state parks.
North Carolina families are under assault. As your Senator, I fought to defend and preserve traditional marriage between one man and one woman by voting to put the Marriage Amendment on the ballot in May 2012. The people of North Carolina deserve the opportunity to vote on a Marriage Amendment to our state Constitution and now they will have the opportunity.
PRO-ENFORCEMENT ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
Individuals entering our country should do so legally and those who have broken our laws should face the consequences. I will fight to overturn the laws which have gutted enforcement of our illegal immigration statues. I oppose giving government benefits or in-state tuition at NC community colleges to illegal aliens. I will make sure local law enforcement has the tools, the authority, and the support that they need and deserve.
