I would like to begin with how humbled I am to have been elected to represent North Carolina Senate District 46, which currently includes Avery, Burke and Caldwell counties. As a result of redistricting, I am seeking re-election to the NC Senate representing the new District 46, which includes Burke, McDowell, and the eastern half of Buncombe. I have made many friends while representing Aver and Caldwell counties and I will miss them, but I am thrilled at the opportunity to represent the people of the new 46th District.
I am a North Carolina native, raised in Burke County—the oldest of four children. In 1986, I received my Eagle Scout award, and in 1987, I graduated from Freedom High School, and was honored to receive a Congressional appointment from former Congressman Cass Ballenger to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point.
In June 1991, I graduated from West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in National Security and Public Affairs. I was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Field Artillery and served in the U.,S. Army for the next six years in rapid deployment artillery units and also as a university level ROTC assistant professor of military science. In 1997, I left active duty, transferred to reserve status, and returned to North Carolina to attend UNC Law School at Chapel Hill, where I graduated with honors in 2000.
After my graduation from law school, Lydia and I returned to Morganton, so I could practice law with my father in our family firm. For over 20 years, I have represented hundreds of clients, and argued cases at every level of the North Carolina court system, from the Burke County courthouse to the North Carolina Supreme Court in Raleigh. I was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2007.
In 1993, I married the love of my life, Lydia Furr, at the West Point Cadet Chapel, and we have been blessed with three wonderful daughters.
As the grandson of a North Carolina tobacco farmer, farming is in my blood. My family and I spend our weekends and spare time on our family farm repairing fences, cutting wood, and growing a garden. My family and I also enjoy spending time outdoors–hiking, camping, horseback riding and canoeing.
As a small businessman and farm owner, I am accustomed to hard work. I am committed to the ideals of self-discipline, integrity, and professionalism, which I learned while working to become an Eagle Scout, and later as a West Point cadet. During my years at West Point, the principles of Duty, Honor, and Country were instilled in me, and these values are still very much a part of who I am and what I believe. For those of you who are military veterans, I thank you and your families for your service.
I look forward to serving the fine people of Burke, McDowell, and Buncombe counties in the North Carolina Senate. God bless you and your family, and may God continue to bless America.
